Question: S. Fogg wrote:

Hello, My research is on the line of Peter Merrill who was a descendant of Nathaniel. He married, I believe, Mary Haseltine, by whom he had several children who died. He then moved to Norwich, CT and was the father of my ancester, the Revolutionary War veteran who is buried in the Beeman Cemetary in North Fairfax, VT. Peter is also the father of the Hannah Merrill Griswold who was discussed in a case study by Jacobus. Can you help me to connect him to the greater family of early Merrills? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Answer: Dear S.?:

Although you did not mention him by name, we believe your ancestor must be Jedediah (5) [1740-1831], the only son of Peter (4) and Mary Haseltine to be b. in Norwich CT. Peter (4)' s lineage is simple to remember, Nathaniel (3,2,1).  Nathaniel (3) and Rebecca Brown, Nathaniel (2) and Joanna Kinney, immigrant Nathaniel (1) and Susannah.  More details are available.

On the web site where you posted this query, Steve Merrill is in the process of posting A MERRILL MEMORIAL by Samuel Merrill, now out of print. I believe he has gotten the information on your line down to Peter (4) posted.

We are trying to database the Merrill/Merrell surname nationwide from the original immigrants right down to the present day for all the immigrant lines. So far we have over 60,000 Merrill males, plus their wives and daughters in our database, but we estimate that there are well over 100,000 so we have a long way to go, and we need and appreciate all the help we can get, particularly with the later generations. We use this database strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill roots. Be assured that no info on living individuals will become internet accessible. We would be interested in any info you have on the Merrill surname descendants of Jedediah down to the present.

We write the query column for the MERRILL NEWSLETTER published by Lil Hall Welch. Check out the Newsletter homepage at <www.merrill.org/genealogy/tmn>
