Question: Carole Vanpatten wrote:
Hello, My grandfather was Charles Cyrus Merrill born oct 3 1895 Hannibal NY His father was William Sherman Merrill born jan 10 1865 Married 1892 in Volney NY Not certain of his birth place but the family was from Chateaugay Lake NY Hoping find out who are his parents and grandparents! and then hopefully trace it back farther. My Mother Jessie May nee Merrill is 84 is hoping to find out about her Merrill family. So any help you can offer would be appreciated I'm not an expert at this genealogy stuff just hoping to find out some info on some family lines. Many thanks Carole Van Patten.
Answer: Carole:
Our first search of our database came up empty, but your mention of Chateaugay Lake struck a bell. A number of years ago we received from one of our correspondents on Chateaugay Lakes which has a good bit of info on the Merrills there, but as it turns out nothing about your William Sherman. But it seemed reasonable to assume he must be part of this large family. Paul (6) Merrill [1796-1877] came to the area in 1823 from Gilmanton NH, and most if not all the Merrills in the area are descended from Paul. When we started looking in detail at Paul's children, we hit pay dirt! His oldest son, Cyrus King (7) [1818-1910] m. twice. His 1st wife, Clarissa Daggett, d. in childbirth, 1865 Jan 10, giving b. to your William Sherman. The reason we didn't find him at first is that we had him listed as Sherman William, but with the correct b. date. That is the ONLY information we had on him. He was not listed in the 1870 census with Cyrus [and 2nd wife] or with other Merrill family members in the area. Nor did we find him in the 1880 census in the area. I think we assumed he had d. as an infant. It is wonderful that now we find he survived and had issue, We would greatly appreciate the details of William Sherman and his descendants down to the present. William Sherman (8)'s lineage is Cyrus K (7), Paul (6, 5), Enoch (4), Joseph (3), Abel (2), immigrant Nathaniel (1) who came to Newbury MA in 1639 from Wherstead, Suffolk, England. More details are available.
Let us introduce our selves. We are Howard and Jean Merrill. For twenty five years we have been trying to database the Merrill/Merrell family nationwide from the original immigrants down to the present day for all immigrant lines. So far we have info on over 60,000 Merrill males plus their wives and daughters in our database, but we estimate there have been well over a100,000 so we have a long way to go, and need and appreciate all the help we can get, particularly with the later generations. We use this database strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill roots. Be assured that no info on living individuals will become internet accessible from us.
While our database is not internet searchable, we will be glad to search it for anybody and share what we find at no cost. All we ask is that folks share their Merrill data with us so that we can expand our database and do a better job of helping solve Merrill lineage problems.

I am the daughter of Donald Merrill (1948-2006) who's father was Daniel R. Merrill (1917-1981) who's father was John Merrill b. 1884 in South Dakota, who was in turn the son of John A. Merrill b(1900 census of Elk Point, South Dakota) places his birth 1836 or 1835 (In New York). I am looking for more information on the John A. Merrill and who his parents are. If you have any information on this Merrill would be great.
Thank you, Marion Merrill
Answer: Marion:
Your John A is in our "Lineage Unknown" file. As you stated, he was in Elk Point SD in 1900. We were able to trace him back to Souix Valley, Union, SD in 1880, and to Leroy, Boone, IL in 1870 and 1860. Apparently they moved to SD from IL between 1873 and 1877. Our only clue as to who his father might be comes from the 1860 census. The only other Merrill in Leroy is a John, 62, b, NY, with a 2nd wife Catherine, 42, and young son, Frank, 3, and 3 Brown Stepchildren, ages 10-15. It is only our surmise that this John might be John A's father. We have not been able to locate either this John [ca 52] or John A [ca 15] in the 1850 census.
In the 1870 census a Calvin Hutchins, 62, b. NY, is living with John A and wife Jane [Jane's Father ??]. We looked for Calvin in the 1840 and 50 NY census, but didn't find one that fit [on the hope that John A might be from the same town as Jane].

Question: Clarence A Tillery wrote:
Trying to straighten out my Capt.Benjamin Line. I have William/Grace>William Jr/Penelope>Capt Benjamin Richard and William are brothers rather than father/son. Is this correct? My line is now William> William,Jr>Capt. Benjamin> Andrew> Andrew,Jr>Ransom P.> Marion H.> Laura C.> Ada Silver> Clarence Tillery> Clarence Tillery, Jr
Thanks CAT
Answer: Clarence:
You've got the lineage right. Richard and William are brothers. William (1) served on jury duty on SI in 1681. He bought property there in 1683. He and Grace sold that property in 1687 before moving to NJ. Richard (1) did have a son, William (2), bapt 1668 Apr 13 in Tysoe, Warwickshire, England. He would be too young to be the William who served on Jury duty or bought property in 1683. William (2) left SI after an apparent disagreement with his father Richard and moved to St. Mary's Co, MD. He m. Ann Angel and d. there in 1712.
Do you have dates for Laura C and her m. date to T Anderson Silver? How about a d. date for Marion Haley Merrill?

Trying to find more information on my g-g-grandparents william and Elsey Merrill, from Warren, N H.daughter Emma J Merrill, was my g-grandmother and Emma's daughter Julia, was my grandmother.
Answer: Phyllis:
Your William (8) Merrill, 1825-1902, was a Methodist Minister. He m. 1848 Sep 5, Elsie Ann Bixby of Warren NH. His lineage is Samuel L (7), Abel (6), John (5), Abel (4,3,2), immigrant Nathaniel (1). More details are available.
We have that Emma Josephine, b. 1849 Nov 17, in Warren, m. 1873 Jan 1, Horace Aurelius "Red" Campbell of Sutter Creek, CA. There must be an interesting story there. Was he a gold miner or was he there to "mine the miners"? Did they m. in CA? Do you have a d. date for her?

Question: Betty K Ott wrote:
In reference to our last communication and the genealogy report you sent about Charles M. Merrill, son of Mark F. Merrill, you commented that "Charles was born before his mother married....". I beg to differ with you on that fact. I have in front of me the Lucas County Ohio Probate Cour! t Marriage Records. On it are listed not only Huldah Merrill and Thomas Leaming's marriage date of 18 Sep 1844 by Charles V. Merrill but also Sarah Leaming to Mark F. Merrill on 8 Sep 1844 - also by Charles V. Merrill. In light of this, Merrill as Charles M.'s surname was correct and legal. I do have a question though about the birthplace(s) of the first several children of C. V. Merrill. In every case Dover, Piscataquis, ME is given except for Huldah. Her birthplace was given as Dover, Penobscot, ME. Every map I've checked shows a Dover (later Dover-Foxcroft) only in Piscataquis. Can you give me any insight on this bit of confusion?
Answer: Betty Kay:
You are absolutely correct. Sorry about that note. That note was put in there when we thought Charles was the son of Huldah, and we neglected to remove it when we found he was the son of Mark and Sarah Leaming. Thanks for catching the error. Thanks for the m. dates. Do those Probate Court Marriage Records have the m. of any other Merrills?
With regard to the record of Huldah's b. Actually it is correct and all of Charles V's children b. in ME should be listed as b. Dover, Penobscot, ME. Charles V left ME for OH in 1837. Piscataquis County was formed in 1838 from parts of Penobscot and Somerset Co. So it wasn't until 1838 that Dover was in Piscataquis Co.
It didn't move, only the county lines. So we need to go back and revise the bp of Charles V's other children. We, like you did, looked at current maps to see what county Dover was in. In the 1830 census Charles V is listed in Dover, Penobscot, ME.

I have just started with my family tree but it comes to late for help from grandparents. My grandmother was Beverly June Merrill Ashford Born July 25, 1939 Death December 10, 2007 Born to Ransom and Clara (Ward) Merrill if you have any information on Ransom's family please let me know. Thanks
Answer: Beth:
While we don't have record of Beverly June's birth, we do have Ransom Amos (10) Merrill and wife Clara Ward in our database. We found the family in the 1930 census, the latest census available, in Bradley, Kankakee, IL. Ransom's lineage is Alver S (9), Amos A (8), Amos (7), Abraham (6,5,4), Jonathan (3), Abraham (2), immigrant Nathaniel (1). More details are available. Too bad you didn't start this last year when your grandmother could have helped. What do you know about her sibling's families and their descendants down to the present?
