NATHANIEL2
MERRILL (Nathaniel1)
spent his life in Newbury, Mass., but whether he was born
in England, or in America after his father's migration,
is not known. He died 1 Jan. 1682/3. In a "List of
their names who have taken the oath of Allegiance at Newberry,
1678," on file with the Essex County court papers
at Salem (vol. 30, p. 56), his age is recorded as 40 years,
while the age of his brother Abraham is given as 41 years.
It is believed, however, that Nathaniel was the oldest
of the children, a belief based on the fact that he was
named as executor of his father's will, and was therefore
probably of age in March, 1655.
Nathaniel2
Merrill married, 15 Oct. 1661, Joanna Ninian. The name
is written Ninny in the original record. In Coffin's "History
of Newbury" and Hoyt's "Old Families of Salisbury
and Amesbury" it is given as Kinney, and in Savage's
"Genealogical Dictionary" as Kenney. There is
no record of other Ninnys, Kinneys or Kenneys in Newbury
in the early years of the settlement, but there were Kenneys
at Salem and elsewhere in the county. Ninian also appears
as an early family name, but not frequently. Individuals
at that time were indifferent with regard to the uniform
spelling of family names, and clerks naturally were no
more accurate in making records. General Lewis Merrill
was convinced that the name was Ninian. Joanna Merrill
died 8 Feb. 1717/18, aged about 90.
The
estate of Nathaniel2 Merrill was inventoried
at £520,7s. at his death, and his debts amounted
to £ 46,9s.8d. He owned land in Haverhill, which
he gave to his sons Nathaniel and Peter.
