   Wilterton3 MERRILL (John2) was born 28 June, 1675, in Hartford, Conn., and died 14 May, 1755, having lived in Hartford all his life. Gregory Wilterton of Hartford, who is supposed to have been a connection of the family, (see supra pp. 82-83) at his death, in July, 1674, left the larger portion of his estate to John2 Merrill, and John2 Merrill named his next-born son in honor of his benefactor. Wilterton3 Merrill was one of the original proprietors of the town of Winchester, Conn., in 1744, but he never lived there. He married (1) 1 Jan. 1702/3, Ruth Pratt, daughter of John and Hepzibah Pratt of Hartford; she was born 21 Dec. 1677; he married (2) 20 Jan. 1708/9, Hannah Waters, daughter of Bevil Waters of Hartford; she died 8 May, 1730, aged 49, and he married (3) Elizabeth , who survived him. Children:

  
i.   Ruth4, bap. 10 July, 1704; d. before 1731.
  
  ii. Samuel4; d. unm. Jan. 1742/3, in Hartford.
 
  iii. Hannah4, bap. 7 Feb. 1713/14; m. Daniel Butler
    of Hartford, son of Thomas and Abigail Butler,
who was born 11 Oct. 1704.
 
  59   iv.     Gideon4; d. 9 Sept. 1757.

   "Wilterton Merrill" executed his will 19 July 1750. "I give to my wife Elizabeth twelve Pounds in money old Tenor, and six good sheep, and also two Cows in lieu of those she bro't with her when I married her, and one two year old Steer. Item - I give and bequeth to my Son Gideon my gun, Sword and belt. Item - I give to my daughter Hannah Butler "twelve acres of land in the West Division." Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Hannah Butler my Negro man called Tye." A bequest of a Negro man Aaron to his son Gideon is stricken out in the original will. Godeon was made executor and residuary ligatee. S.M.
