*  The will of James3 Merrill is given in the Maine Historical and Genealogical Recorder, vol. 111, pp. 182-4. James3 Merrill was buried "near Presumpscot River." Fred O. Conaut of Portland wrote, in 1905, that his tombstone "was to be found a few years ago."

________________________________

The house of James3 Merrill had been a garrison house, and was said to have been built in 1714. It was three-quarters of a mile east of Presumpscot Falls. It was occupied by Adams4 Merrill and other Merrill descendants until 1878, when it was torn down by Harlon-Page7 Merrill. (See page 625)

Giles-William4 Merrill of St. Paul (1829-1918), a native of Falmouth, wrote, in 1901, that James3 Merrill and his wife were members of the First Church, in what is now Portland. The distance to church, in a straight line, was 3½ miles, but by the road it was eight miles. In 1752 the New Casco church was built.
